“Can’t divide the dark from the light, I am stuck between—where do I begin?” Dark pop artist Taboo Zero embarks on a surreal search for the self in her debut single “Who Am I.” The ethereal track features writing, production, and vocal credits by CalArts alum Jaslyn Loftin (Music BFA 19), also known as J.Lyn.

Taboo Zero, the musical alias of Maria Timchenko, created the song in collaboration with students and alums of the Music and Entertainment Learning Experience Program (MELE) in Hawaii. Among the collaborators are J.Lyn and sound designer and producer Alika Gabaylo, who, per the song’s official release, contributed “their unique perspectives, enriching the composition with complementary flavors.” In addition to co-writing the lyrics with Taboo Zero, J.Lyn worked on the song’s vocal production and provided the song’s background vocals.

“Who Am I” is streaming now on all streaming platforms. Listen to a preview of the song below.

As digital content and social media producer, Taya enjoys lifting up the stories and accomplishments of CalArts' students, alums, and faculty. She fancies herself a visual artist but is really more of an overzealous collector of art supplies.
