On Tuesday, Jan. 28, the Hammer Museum at UCLA announced the 27 artists participating in Made in L.A. 2025, the seventh edition of its acclaimed biennial showcasing artists from the greater Los Angeles area. Among the selected artists are four CalArtians: Mike Stoltz (Film/Video MFA 14), Kelly Wall (Art MFA 19), Nicole-Antonia Spagnola (Film/Video BFA 16), and Pat O’Neill, a founding faculty member of the School of Film/Video at CalArts.
Curated by Essence Harden and Paulina Pobocha, the exhibition will run from Oct. 5 to Jan. 4, 2026. This year’s theme will explore artists’ relationships with Los Angeles, highlighting the city’s complexity and diversity. More about Made in L.A. 2025, from the curators:
From the outset of this process, our primary objective was to look at art, and to see as much of it as possible. We wanted to learn from artists and distill an exhibition from those experiences. While there are as many ideas circulating through the show as there are materials, an inquiry into one’s relationship to the city of Los Angeles animates much of the work we will present. Neither myth nor monolith, this city is many things to many people, and its cacophonous disorder is, perhaps, its most distinguishing feature.
The biennial will highlight lesser-known works by O’Neill, a pioneering figure in avant-garde cinema renowned for his groundbreaking optical printing techniques and innovative moving-image experiments. Artist and sculptor Wall brings a contemporary approach to traditional art forms, incorporating materials like stained glass to evoke nostalgia and memory while examining emotional perception and perspective. Made in L.A. 2025 will also feature experimental films by Stoltz and multimedia artist Spagnola.
