Roy E. Disney Family Chair in Musical Composition David Rosenboom has a packed schedule this October. Throughout the month, the former dean of The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts will undertake a residency, release his latest album with a fellow CalArtian, and speak at a local artist business conference.
UIUC Residency
Rosenboom was awarded a two-week residency at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), his alma mater, as a George A. Miller Visiting Professor with an interdisciplinary theme of uniting arts and sciences. As visiting professor in UIUC’s Experimental Arts & Sciences lecture series, Rosenboom’s research on propositional music serves as a focus for “building models of possible worlds” by bringing together faculty throughout UIUC across disciplines—performing art to computer science and engineering, visual art and design to biochemistry.
Running from Monday, Oct. 3 to Friday, Oct. 14, the residency features a multitude of lectures, workshops, concerts, and even a radio program. Find the complete programming below and on UIUC’s website.

New Album
New music by Rosenboom releases later this month with NOWS, an album created alongside performer, composer, and former faculty Sarah Belle Reid (Music MFA 15, DMA 20). Across 11 tracks, NOWS is a sonic expression of the trials and tribulations brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. More about the album from Ravello Records:
The music examines the notion of “co-presence,” or togetherness, when experienced in isolation. This seemingly self-contradictory concept became an everyday occurrence as in-person gatherings became video conferences. Performer-composers Reid and Rosenboom spent this time passing fragmented musical ideas back and forth. In this organic way, a collection of “sound correspondences” accumulated between the two artists, made with instruments ranging from strings and horns to modular synthesizers, analog signal processors, urban and desert soundscapes, and much more. The resulting album, NOWS, is a post-genre masterpiece that speaks to our unique moment in history.
NOWS was released on Sept. 9 is be available to stream or purchase on Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, YouTube, and Deezer. Listen to the album below.
