This Thursday, July 13, LGBTQ-oriented nonprofit Outfest begins the 41st edition of its summer film festival at the Orpheum Theater in LA. At the opening night gala, filmmaker and CalArts alum Andrew Ahn (Film/Video MFA 2011) will be honored with the prestigious Outfest Achievement Award.

Described as a “longtime friend” of Outfest in the official announcement, Ahn has garnered acclaim in recent years for films like the GLAAD Media Award-nominated Fire Island (2022) and Driveways (2019). He has also served as a mentor to youth filmmakers through the nonprofit’s OutSet program, among others.

Ahn’s other other notable accolades include a 2017 Film Independent Spirit John Cassavetes Award for his debut feature film Spa Night (2016), as well as a 2012 aGLIFF Award, the 2016 Jury Award at the Boston LGBT Film Festival, the 2016 Bill Sherwood Award, and 2011 and 2016 awards at the San Diego Asian Film Festival.

The opening gala at Outfest also features a screening of director Aitch Alberto’s coming-of-age feature Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (2022). Outfest takes place at several venues in Los Angeles, running through July 23.
