Interdisciplinary composer and vocalist Odeya Nini (Music MFA 11) performs her most recent album ODE on Tuesday, March 21 at downtown Los Angeles-based experimental performance venue Automata, taking place as part of its Experimental Sound series TAPETAIL.

Nini brings her sonic investigation of extended vocal techniques, performance, resonance, and “pure expression” to Automata with an acoustic set combining selections from the album with new works. More about the album and performance from Automata LA:

The work is a series of malleable compositions and improvisations aiming to dissociate the voice from its traditional attributes and create a new logic of song that is not only heard but seen through movement and action. Odeya will be performing pieces from her recently released album ODE, recognized as a notable recording of 2022 by The New Yorker Magazine, as well as other original pieces for solo voice.

Doors open at 7:30 pm.

Automata, located in LA’s Chinatown, was founded in 2004 by artists Susan Simpson (Film/Video MFA 99) and School of Theater faculty Janie Geiser. Among its current winter/spring artists in residence are several CalArtians: Roksana Pirouzmand (Art BFA 17), Noah Malone (Art, Film/Video BFA 17), Moira MacDonald (Theater MFA 12), School of Critical Studies faculty Gabrielle Civil, and DanRae Wilson (Theater MFA 08).
