On Thursday, March 31, Los Angeles Dance Project (LADP) showcases works from its LAUNCH:LA 2022 resident artists, including CalArts alum Taliha Abdiel (Dance BFA 21). The special performances are presented as part of Thursday’s “Private View” during the seventh edition of The Other Art Fair in Los Angeles, running March 31–April 3.

LADP’s LAUNCH:LA residency program was designed to support local dance-centered artists in the early stages of their careers. Abdiel will present work developed during her residency, which was inspired by US Army studying different concepts of meditation: “Transcendental meditation, astral projection, to sort of look at human consciousness as it exists outside the body and in other realms, universes, speaking with sort of entities or extraterrestrials or beings from other dimensions,” Abdiel elaborated in a conversation with LADP. “I thought that was really interesting, and to see it would translate from more of a scientific language and research into a more physical practice, such as dance.”

Preceding Abdiel’s 8:30 pm preview is fellow LAUNCH:LA resident artist DaEun Jung, who presents her performance at 7:15 pm.

Abdiel has danced and choreographed at various festivals, theaters, galleries, workshops, and conferences throughout the globe, including the Centre National de la Danse in Paris and recently La Biennale Di Venezia Dance Festival 2021 in Venice. She is the recipient of a 2016 Herb Alpert Scholarship for Emerging Young Artists and a 2020 full-ride Fisher Scholarship.
