For one night only, on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 pm, the Alonzo King LINES Ballet will perform live at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, Calif.
Visionary choreographer and CalArts alum Alonzo King (Theater-Dance 72, DFA 07) will present a series of excerpts from his rich body of work, spanning nearly 40 years, including the acclaimed cross-disciplinary piece AZOTH.
AZOTH was created by King in collaboration with Memphis Music Hall of Fame inductee Charles Lloyd, and Jason Moran, a MacArthur Fellow and artistic director for jazz at the Kennedy Center. Together the artists “create an unforgettable dialogue between movement and music that illuminates the shared freedom and wonder of their art forms,” according to the program. Accompanying the performance is a light installation by renowned Bay Area artist Jim Campbell, whose work is featured at the top of San Francisco’s Salesforce Tower.
Based in San Francisco, King has infused the Alonzo King LINES Ballet with his unique artistic vision since 1982. His works are included in the repertories of the world’s leading ballet and modern companies, and in 2005, King was named a Master of Choreography by the Kennedy Center. He has received numerous awards and accolades, including the Jacob’s Pillow Creativity Award, the US Artist Award in Dance, NY Bessie Award, the 2015 Doris Duke Artist Award, and an NEA Choreographer’s Fellowship. He holds an honorary doctorate from Dominican University, California Institute of the Arts, and The Juilliard School.
