School of Theater faculty Janie Geiser has been awarded a 2026 Robert Rauschenberg Residency, an invitation-only program that supports artists working across disciplines.
The Robert Rauschenberg Residency takes place on Captiva Island, Florida., at the former home and studio of artist Robert Rauschenberg. Inspired by Rauschenberg’s early years at Black Mountain College in North Carolina, the residency emphasizes experimentation, collaboration, and cross-disciplinary exchange.
Following the recent announcement by the Foundation that the Captiva residency will conclude in August, the cohort of 10 artists that Geiser was part of will be the program’s penultimate awardees.
A multidisciplinary artist, Geiser’s practice includes cinema, performance, and installation, and is known for its recontextualization of abandoned images and objects, as well as its investigation of memory, power, and loss. She is a Guggenheim Fellow and has received numerous honors, including a Doris Duke Artist Award, an OBIE Award, and the 2023 Brakhage Vision Award. Her film The Red Book was selected for the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.
Geiser is also a founder and co-director of Automata, an artist-run nonprofit in Los Angeles’ Chinatown neighborhood.
