On Thursday, April 11, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation announced the 2024 class of Guggenheim Fellows. Among the “distinguished list of culture-creators working across 52 disciplines” were two CalArts faculty members from the School of Film/Video: Lilli Carré, special faculty in the Experimental Animation Program, and the Film Directing Program’s Juan Pablo González.
Both were chosen through a rigorous application and peer review process from a pool of nearly 3,000 applicants, considering both career achievement and exceptional promise. Now in its 99th year, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation awarded fellowships and monetary prizes to 188 American and Canadian scientists, scholars in the social sciences and humanities, and writers and artists.
González’s work spans fiction and nonfiction. His debut feature, Dos estaciones, had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and won Best Feature at at the Gotham Awards in 2022. He was also named one of Filmmaker magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” in 2015.
Interdisciplinary artist Carré works primarily in experimental animation, ceramic sculpture, print, and textile. Her films have shown in festivals throughout the US and abroad, including the Sundance Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Annecy, 25FPS, European Media Arts Festival, New Chitose Animation Festival, Guanajuato International Film Festival, and Pictoplasma.
Since its establishment in 1925, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has granted more than $400 million in Fellowships to more than 19,000 individuals.
