School of Theater faculty Rafael Lopez-Barrantes’ new book, Voice Made Visible: Multi-Octave Voice Training and Techniques for Performers, has been published this month by Routledge. An innovative resource for voice artists and actors, the volume was edited by CalArts alum Grace Leneghan (Theater MFA 22).
Barrantes is an established voice teacher and founder of the Barrantes Voice System (BVS), which utilizes an array of breathing and conditioning exercises to “reveal the human voice.” In his new volume, he demonstrates various applications of these “multi-octave vocal range techniques” in order to discover new methods of voice and performance training. In Voice Made Visible, Rafael Lopez-Barrantes builds on the voice work created by Alfred Wolfsohn and developed by Roy Hart and his company in France to assist students, artists, and those interested in the performing arts with their vocal practice. He draws from over three decades of multicultural performance and teaching, sharing the three fundamental pillars of his system: Fiction, News, and Body Source. This book will help readers unfold their understanding of the voice by strengthening it and inspire them to create new vocal paths for the stage, camera, and voice acting, as well as for their own personal expressive growth.

Barrantes has taught in the CalArts School of Theater since 2007, and served as the school’s associate director of performance from 2010 to 2016. He has also developed and is committed to a BVS teacher certification program for CalArtians. Among those certified is fellow faculty and School of Theater alum Kalean Ung (Theater MFA 12), who is a BVS designated master teacher.
