CalArts alum and current REEF resident artist Jordan Wong (Film/Video MFA 20) presents recently finished works in the solo show, I Would’ve Been Happy, running now through Saturday, May 13 at The REEF in downtown Los Angeles. The show consists of three parts: Wong’s animated nonfiction short and two sculptural works created in service of the film.
The film “I Would’ve Been Happy,” which Wong developed during his graduate studies at CalArts, serves as the show’s centerpiece. More about the film from the artist’s website:
An attempt to map a fraught relationship through the use of intricately coded pictographs and schematic abstractions applied onto glazed ceramic tiles and quilted cyanotype fabric. The aesthetics of architectural language are used to reconstruct memories of my family’s domestic spaces in the hope to uncover logic to a broken home.

Presented alongside the film are two sculptural pieces, both of which are fashioned like quilts. The first is Hopefully You Remember This, a “quilt” comprising 210 glazed ceramic tiles the artist created during CalArts’ Summer Ceramic Residency in 2019 and accompanying experimental comic book. The third is the sculptural piece Other Than That, I Had A Good Time, made of cyanotype and machine embroidered fabric.
