REDCAT concludes its current season with KLII, an innovative theater work by 2021 Herb Alpert Award in the Arts recipient Kaneza Schaal, running Thursday, June 23 to Saturday, June 25.
KLII “exorcises the ghost” of King Leopold II of Belgium with a “mytho-biographical performance” by Schaal herself. The work draws upon Mark Twain’s fictional monologue King Leopold’s Soliloquy (1905), written after the author’s visit to the Congo Free state, as well as former Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo Patrice Lumumba’s 1960 independence speech.
The work is designed and co-directed by Christopher Myers, with whom Schaal presented an AR sculpture and sound work titled EVERY VOICE at the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Noon to Midnight program this past April.
