On Tuesday, April 19, composer, sound artist, and CalArts alum Ellen Reid (Music MFA 11) joins “iconoclastic” Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto for an eclectic evening performance at the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Act II of Ellen Reid’s p r i s m opens on a rowdy club, but the commotion soon dissipates into peace as mother Lumee recalls a tender dream of daughter Bibi. The program, co-curated by Kuusisto and Reid, features performances by the LA Phil New Music Group and Eliza Bagg (soprano) and will be conducted by François López-Ferrer. The evening kicks off with the world premiere of Desiderium, a composition by Reid for solo violin commissioned by the LA Phil.
“One of the great joys as a composer is collaborating with brilliant performers,” Reid said of the work. “To that end, I’m so honored to write for Pekka Kuusisto, one of the most creative, unique and captivating violinists of our time. Desiderium is inspired by family: the warmth of the highs, the anguish of the lows, the whole world.”
The lineup also includes Reid’s works Fear l Release and Lumee’s Dream. The latter, an aria from the second act of her Pulitzer Prize-winning work p r i s m, is a brand new arrangement commissioned by the LA Phil.
