CalArts has once again been named one of the nation’s best film schools, ranking 12th on TheWrap‘s annual list of Top 50 Film Schools in the United States.
Conducted in partnership with data research firm Screen Engine/ASI, the review considered factors such as student retention, graduation rates, faculty qualifications, range of coursework, access to equipment, and career placement. Additional points were awarded for proximity to major industry hubs, notable alumni, and distinctions earned by students and faculty.
In its profile of CalArts, TheWrap highlighted the newly established Chanel Center for Artists and Technology (CCAT), created through a major grant from Chanel. The initiative will provide opportunities for students, faculty, and visiting fellows to explore and develop cutting-edge technologies in the emerging fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and digital imaging.
More on CalArts from TheWrap:
The film/video division is headed by experimental filmmaker Ranu Mukherjee. But the school, which counts Walt Disney as a founder, is best known for its animation program. A who’s-who of Hollywood animation heavyweights got their education here: Pete Docter, Genndy Tartakovsky, Lauren Faust, Brad Bird, Tim Burton, Carrie Hobson and Chris Sanders. Still, the film program can point to its own luminaries, like James Mangold, Kirby Dick and Sofia Coppola (who dropped out before finishing).
