Nominations for the 77th Emmy Awards were announced last Tuesday (July 15) by the Television Academy in North Hollywood. This year’s balloting season was marked by the highest voting turnout in the history of the Academy. A number of CalArts alums were recognized for their excellence in producing, cinematography, animation, production design, and lighting.
The HBO Max documentary Pee-wee as Himself received five nominations for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, Directing, Picture Editing, Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing. The film centers on the life and legacy of Paul Reubens (Theater BFA 73), who served as executive producer and narrates the story in his own words. Reubens, who passed away in 2023, was best known for creating the iconic character Pee-wee Herman.
