For the first time ever, CalArts will take part in The Armory Show, New York’s leading art fair this week (Sept. 6-8).
Heading east to New York’s Javits Convention Center, the Institute will showcase work from 50+50: A Creative Century from Chouinard to CalArts, the unprecedented alumni and artist-led scholarship endowment initiative launched to commemorate the 50th anniversary of CalArts and the 100th anniversary of Chouinard Art Institute.
Providing an unparalleled opportunity for fair-goers to connect with work borne out of its vibrant community, CalArts’ exhibition will include limited work from artists and CalArtians Lauren Halsey (Art BFA 12), Catherine Opie (Art MFA 88), Tony Oursler (Art BFA 79), Gala Porras-Kim (Art MFA 09), Allen Ruppersberg (Chouinard 67), David Salle (Art BFA 73), Barbara T. Smith (Chouinard 65), and Carrie Mae Weems (Art BFA 81).
In 2020, to mark the joint anniversaries, CalArts collaborated with publisher Lisa Ivorian-Jones to commission a series of limited-edition artworks from 50 distinguished alumni artists. The resulting 50+50 works reflect the diversity of alumni from CalArts and Chouinard, who have shaped the forefront of contemporary art over the past century.
Proceeds from the sales of the artworks at The Armory Show will directly contribute to the CalArts School of Art Alumni Scholarship endowment, ensuring essential financial support for future students.
