On Saturday, Aug. 24, The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City presents What It Becomes, an exhibition showcasing new and rarely seen works from its collection. The exhibit challenges conventional notions of drawing, presenting a dynamic exploration of the medium through the eyes of 11 visionary artists, including CalArts alums Catherine Opie (Art MFA 88), Naotaka Hiro (Art MFA 00), and David Hammons (Chouinard 68).

Organized by Curatorial Fellow Scout Hutchinson, What It Becomes explores the malleability of identity and the ways in which drawing can both reveal the unseen and transform the familiar. The works on display span various techniques and mediums, including paper, photography, and video. The title is inspired by the words of artist Toyin Ojih Odutola, who describes how drawing metamorphoses source imagery into something new, stating, “What it becomes is what I’m interested in.”

The exhibition runs through Jan. 12, 2025.
