Orenda Records Extravaganza at Angel City Jazz Fest

The Angel City Jazz Festival is in full swing, running through Friday, Oct. 15 at several venues throughout Los Angeles. On Saturday night (Oct. 15), the festival showcases and celebrates the artists of Orenda Records, a music label founded in 2014 by trumpeter, composer, and producer Dan Rosenboom (Music MFA 07).

“The five-band, 46-musician extravaganza, features many of the Los Angeles scene’s rising stars, and quite a few CalArts alumni,” Rosenboom wrote in an email. The lineup includes Orenda’s core artists and acts that represent the label’s future horizons.

The scheduled five-hour concert begins at 5:30 pm with an all-ages set by the Jon Hatamiya Big Band, premiering a new piece commissioned by the Los Angeles Jazz Society for its Jeff Clayton Memorial New Note Award:

  • Jon Hatamiya: trombone/composer/arranger
  • Saxes: Alex Hahn, Devin Daniels, Matt Richards, Chris Sullivan, Herny Solomon
  • Trombones: Steven Robinson, Abdullah Ebrahim, Ido Meshulam, Jake Kraft 
  • Trumpets: Ryan DeWeese, Rigo Velez, Harry Ostrander, Aidan Lombard 
  • Rhythm: Adam Hersh (piano/synths), Colin Cook (guitar), Yunus Iyriboz (Music BFA 13) (guitar), Dan Chmielinski (bass), Colin McDaniel (drums)

At 6:30 pm, the Bridge to Everywhere with artistic director Derrick Skye (Music MFA 08) performing another all-ages set:

  • Derrick Skye – Conducting
  • Rachel Iba (Music MFA 17) – Violin
  • Yvette Holzwarth (Music MFA 16) – Violin
  • Anna Kouchnerov – Violin
  • Nikki Shorts – Viola
  • Chris Votek – Cello
  • Hanna Arista – Vocals/Percussions
  • Neelamjit Dhillon (Music MFA 12, DMA 15) – Bansuri/Sax
  • Phillip Graulty – Acoustic Guitar
  • Dimitris Mahlis – Oud
  • Mark Gutierrez – Bass
  • James Waterman (Music MFA 15) – Percussion

The second part of the Orenda Records show is 21+ and begins at 8 pm with the Cathlene Pineda Quartet:

  • Cathlene Pineda (Music MFA 12) – Piano
  • Kris Tiner – Trumpet
  • David Tranchina (Music MFA 08) – Bass
  • Tina Raymond – Drums

At 9 pm, NOICE takes the stage:

  • Alexander Noice (Music BFA 08) – Guitar/Compositions
  • Argenta Walther (Music MFA 10) – Voice
  • Karina Kallas – Voice
  • Gavin Templeton (Music MFA 08) – Alto Saxophone
  • Miller Wrenn (Music MFA 17) – Bass
  • Andrew Lessman (Music BFA 09) – Drums

And the Dan Rosenboom Quartet closes the night with their 10 pm set:

  • Mark Ferber (former Music visiting faculty) – Drums
